A Colonial Menu in Tripoli: Art, Cuisine, and the Shadow of Fascist Italy
When I first held the vintage menu from "Restaurant Tres Chefs" in Tripoli, I was struck by its hand-painted cover: palm trees swaying over men on horseback in flowing Arab dress, the bold signature of Giuseppe Riccobaldi del Bava anchoring the scene. The address - Corso I. Balbo, 23 - evoked a time when Libya was not Libyan, but a showcase of Italian colonial ambition. This menu is more than a culinary artifact; it is a window into the era of Fascist Italy's rule in North Africa, a period marked by artistic flourish, propaganda and profound violence.

The menu featuring Riccobaldi's signature, palm trees, and men on horseback in Arab dress for "Restaurant Tres Chefs" at Corso I. Balbo, 23 - Tripoli and is a rare artifact from the Italian colonial era in Libya.
